Product research for technology brands tests whether a feature or product direction solves a problem your buyer will actually pay to fix, not just a problem they'll politely agree exists when you describe it to them. In B2B tech specifically, the person you're testing with is rarely the person who signs the contract, and research that doesn't account for that gap routinely validates products that never survive procurement.
The standard failure mode in B2B tech product research is testing with the user and pricing for the buyer, as though they're the same person with the same priorities. A developer might love a feature that their VP of Engineering will never approve budget for, because the value the feature delivers doesn't map to the metric the budget-holder is measured on.
Useful product research separates these roles deliberately: does this solve a real problem for the person who'll use it day to day, and does it solve a problem the person who approves spend actually cares about cost reduction, risk reduction, or a number they report upward. A product can pass the first test and fail the second, and most research never finds that out until after launch.
The buyer and the user are frequently different people with different incentives. Testing only with end users tells you whether they'd enjoy using something, not whether procurement will ever approve it.
Technology buyers are a small, senior, heavily self-selecting population. As with reputation research, the sample has to be built through genuine screening verifying signed-off budget authority and recent purchase involvement rather than trusting self-declared job titles, which inflate "decision-maker" samples significantly.
Category maturity changes what "interest" even means. In an emerging category, stated interest is unreliable because people are reacting to a concept they've never used a category norm for. In a mature category, stated interest is unreliable for the opposite reason everyone already has an incumbent and will say they're "interested" in anything without meaning they'll switch.
The problem isn't that tech companies skip product research. It's that most of it validates enthusiasm from the wrong half of the buying committee.
